Dear Artists,

Every now and again I meet people who have a special connection to a fur person. This connection always inspires me because I too have my own. And when I hear of one of these inter-species friendships, I have a desperate need to capture it in a way that suits me or the person.

I dare you to capture your pet and try to recreate them in an artistic expression.

Portraits are always fun whatever your choice of artistic medium. I recommend using a picture as reference given our animal familiars rarely sit still or pose for their portrait. This is of course based on experience and several wonky attempts. But perhaps do so anyway. Perhaps you fancy something akin to a Picasso of your pup.

Example 1)

Sometimes I will hang out with the pet to see if I can catch a moment with my camera that sums up their personality. I will make a game of doing a photo-shoot to come up with a glamour shot of said animal. If you are going for a certain mood, by all means play with the filters and adjust the photo settings. Making a black and white moody shot can bring out their classy side!

Example 2)

If you like, take it to the next level. Try writing a children’s story, maybe a poem, a storyboard sketch or a great black and white photo blurred around the edges. Writing little stories about your lovely critter can bring you joy. No one has to see them but you. Who knows, your fur person or feathery fellow may inspire the next biggest bestseller. You could be the next Beatrix Potter with a little practice. Either way, they are great mementos.

Example 3)

If you are drawn to film, try making a documentary complete with a voice-over in the style of David Attenborough, a gossip journalist or maybe Levar Burton telling a story. I think these are fun to do just for yourself, but if you need a reason to create them, they can be something to look back upon as entertaining memories. They are also great practice with your phone technology and make for fun social posts if you are striving to be an influencer.

Example 4)

Creativity Prompt: Whatever your choice of medium, try expressing the personality of a fur person. You just might form a deeper connection to your animal counterparts with better understanding, appreciation and communication.

AND the products can become the best gifts as well.
